Silent Generators: It’s Not Just About Decibels

When discussing ultra-silent generators, or hyper-silent models, we refer to machines capable of operating at a noise level below 55dB measured 7 meters away while running at 75% of their nominal load. Reducing noise below 55dB is extremely challenging; the difference between 54dB and 53dB is noticeable and significant, unlike the barely perceptible difference between 65dB and 64dB.

However, it’s not just a matter of decibels. There are considerations to be made regarding the balance between noise reduction and the performance of the generator, some of which are particularly critical.

The first, but not least important, consideration is the size of an ultra-silent generator. Achieving drastic noise reduction often involves solutions like the “matryoshka” system. Inspired by the famous Russian nesting dolls, this method entails placing a soundproofed generator inside an additional larger soundproof enclosure, such as a container. The result is a significant reduction in noise levels.

While effective, this solution has two major drawbacks. First, the resulting machine becomes disproportionately large (sometimes double or triple its normal size). Second, such a system is impractical for transport and maintenance access. A third issue, though less critical when aiming for a highly customized solution, is the cost.

Silent Generators

Another widely adopted method for ultra-silent generators is the “bell” solution, where a secondary enclosure is lowered over the generator like a bell. This solution is easy to produce but must be custom-designed to ensure proper cooling. However, it is not always effective or practical. The bell system requires a flat, adequately sized base around the generator, without which it cannot function effectively. Moreover, this type of soundproofing turns the generator into a large, cumbersome steel or aluminum box.

The second consideration in the battle against decibels relates to the generator’s actual performance. For instance, when purchasing a 60kVA diesel generator, you expect it to deliver its full rated power. If it triggers thermal protection at 40kVA, something is clearly wrong. A liquid-cooled diesel generator must meet the performance specifications declared by the manufacturer under environmental conditions regulated by EN standards. However, a manufacturer may use more powerful engines or alternators as long as the declared power matches actual output.

Ultra-silent generator manufacturers are few worldwide, and occasionally, they introduce dedicated product lines aiming to break the 55dB threshold. These efforts often encounter temperature-related challenges, especially under extreme test conditions. Only those who rigorously test in demanding environments uncover these issues.

Silengen generators are tested at 110% of their nominal power under the harshest possible environmental conditions. This ensures maximum performance beyond customer expectations. It’s common for customers receiving a Silengen generator to notice a blackened exhaust outlet or cracked paint on the exhaust manifold and turbo casing. This is completely normal—we thoroughly tested it before delivery!

It’s not just about decibels, nor is it solely about power; the real difference lies in achieving a balance between performance factors. Installing the engine of a Ducati Panigale in a Piaggio Ape might theoretically reach 300 km/h (dead or alive), but you’d still be driving an Ape with a Ducati engine.

It’s easy to boast fantastic results, such as record-breaking 43dB, if you place a 20kVA generator in a soundproof enclosure measuring 1.5 meters wide and 5 meters long. While this is possible upon request, it’s far from “normal.”

Ultra-silent generators represent a complex solution that goes beyond merely reducing decibels. The true value lies in achieving a balance between quiet operation, performance, size, and practicality. Each technical configuration has its advantages and limitations, but what truly sets a product apart is the reliability of its performance, tested under extreme conditions, and its ability to meet real customer needs.
